The Times Theatre was designed by Architect Luis Z. Araneta. It was erected in 1939, with a Art Moderne relief ( a late type of the Art Deco design style which emerged during the 1930s. Its architectural style emphasized curving forms, long horizontal lines, and sometimes nautical elements). Unmaintained today, the theater is still operational, and can accommodate 800 people with its single screen operations.

Serbis:

Serbis is an independent film by Brillante Mendoza, starring Gina Pareño and RP’s prince of indie movies Coco Martin. It was invited to the official competition of the 61st Cannes Festival in France and was regarded as the most controversial in Cannes for the year 2008.

Three generations of Pinedas live together under one roof, but they're no bland advertisement for family values: They share that roof with the rundown porn theatre they own and manage, and their lives are almost as racy as the movies they show.

Grandmother Nanay Flor (Gina Pareno) holds the unruly clan together, but her fortitude has been sorely tried. Where the Pinedas once owned a modest chain of three cinemas, they're now down to one, the oh-so-ironically named Family, which barely pays for itself. The drains back up, there are holes in the walls and the Pinedas regularly borrow from the local moneylender to pay their creditors; if it weren't for the hustlers, giggling queens and lady-boys who do business in the darkened auditorium, the theatre would be long gone. Flor's bigamy suit against her estranged husband, Edwin—who started a new family without bothering to divorce her—is proceeding with excruciating slowness and eroding both Flor's coffers and her spirit.

Daughter Nayda (Jaclyn Jose), who handles the day-to-day running of the theatre, wonders why she bothered to get a nursing degree and wishes she hadn't been forced to marry Lando (Julio Diaz) because she was pregnant with their beloved, if bratty, son. He's a decent man and a good father, but Nayda has a secret crush on her cousin, Ronald (Kristofer King), whom Flor took in and hired as a projectionist. Flor also found a job and a room for Alan (Coco Martin), who paints the theatre's gaudy signs. But he's gotten himself into a fine mess: His girlfriend (Mercedes Cabral) is pregnant and he doesn't want to marry her. Adopted daughter Jewel (Roxanne Jordan), not yet in high school, dreamily admires her own naked flesh and hangs out with the she-males in the lobby: That's not going to end well. Are the Family and the family really worth the heartache?

Though a handful of frank sequences scandalized some reviewers, Serbis is hardly pornography: The sex scenes are furtive, unglamorous and abbreviated, an integral part of hardscrabble, impoverished lives in which every pleasure comes at a price. It's not for all tastes, but it's hardly a dirty movie.

Cops catch 2 men having oral sex in cinema

Police officers raided a third-class moviehouse in downtown Manila Thursday night, rounding up 22 men, two of whom were allegedly caught in the act of performing oral sex.

“We have received reports from concerned citizens that illicit sexual activities are going on inside the Lords Theater located along Rizal Avenue in Sta. Cruz, Manila,” said Meisic police station chief Superintendent Nelson Yabut. According to reports, homosexuals go to the theater in search of male sex workers.

He said he deployed undercover policemen inside the theater and after several nights of surveillance verified the reports. Male moviegoers were observed transferring from one seat to another, apparently in search of sex partners. Others were observed doing oral sex, according to the reports of the undercover cops.

Yabut and his men raided the theater at around 8:30 p.m., which was showing two sexy films as a double feature.

During the raid, Marlon Consorte, 31, and Ralph Gonzaga, 20, were allegedly caught in the act of performing oral sex, according to Yabut. He also said that majority of the 22 men rounded up were homosexuals.

Police found the theater dirty, smelly and littered with used tissue paper. The restrooms reeked with the scent of urine, he said.

The 22 men were released after their identities were verified. Yabut said they will file appropriate charges against Consorte and Gonzaga.

Yabut said he will recommend the closure of the theater to Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. – Nestor Etolle
